Come on in and beat the heat with some bowling

01.11.2020

On National Bowling Day, we share these images of opening day of Colonial Bowling Center, March 18, 1960. Everything comes to an end, Nick Anderson, 91, comm...ented to reporters in May when he announced the closing of the popular lanes due in large part to the impact of COVID-19. Colonial, once the bustling hub of bowlers of all ages, was the last of the candlepin alleys in the city that gave birth to the sport in 1880 in the billiards and bowling hall of Justin White on Pearl Street. When Colonial opened in 1960, the Telegram estimated that there were 12,000 league bowlers in the Worcester area. Anderson recalls that there were kids standing outside the door at 8:30 in the morning. Photographs by George Cocaine, T&G photographer, March 18, 1960. Top, left to right (with thanks to members of the Andreson family): Father Solon Tsandikos from St Spyridon church; Helen Andreson, mother of Nicholas and James; Nicholas Andreson, founder; Anastasia (Mrs. Nicholas) Andreson; George Andreson, uncle of Nicholas and James and found of Alpha Lunch; Deputy Mayor Jack Shea; James Andreson, co-founder.
